The Future of Lobbying, the War on Regulation, and the Wild Blue Yonder: Sphere Consulting’s TenCount for December 19, 2016

  • Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah! It’s likely to be a slow week in Washington, with next to nothing happening after Wednesday. There is less than a month to go in the Obama Administration, plenty of time for the Dow to continue its assault on the 20,000 level. Or will it wait for the Trump Administration? The Electoral College meets Monday, making the results of the November election official.
  • The only thing constant is change, said Heraclitus, the Greek philosopher. He might not have been talking about lobbying, but Bloomberg Government will discuss new opportunities and risks for the lobbying industry given Republican control of Congress and the White House. The Tuesday webinar is titled “Lobbying in the Next Administration: Opportunities for Influence.”
  • Japan gets some love this week, as the Hudson Institute on Monday hosts a full-day forum on “Science, Technology and the U.S.-Japan Alliance,” aimed at opportunities for emerging technologies and military strategy. And on Tuesday, the Brookings Institution discusses “Ensuring the Success of the Post-Paris Climate Agenda: U.S.-Japan Relations on the Global Stage.”
  • If the incoming Trump Administration has made one thing clear, it is that it intends to declare war on regulation. On Monday the Economic Policy Institute hosts a discussion on “New Research on Americans’ Attitudes Toward the Enforcement of Regulations.” Previous research indicated strong support for increased enforcement of regulations in the U.S. and in the states.
  • Looking Ahead: With the nomination of a lawyer aligned with the Israeli far right as Trump’s ambassador to Israel, the answers might already be clear. But Monday the Woodrow Wilson Center holds a telephone briefing on “What Do Palestinians and Israelis Expect From a Trump Administration?”
  • Looking back: A retrospective of advancements in criminal justice and civil rights policy during the Obama Administration, and a look at what state and local governments can do to build on that policy momentum, is the subject of a luncheon roundtable on Tuesday at the Hamilton Project.
  • Looking up: The presence of the U.S. Air Force in Europe is a core component of national defense, and on Monday the Secretary of the Air Force discusses “Capabilities, Reassurance & Presence: The US Air Force in Transatlantic Security.”
  • Too successful? Every state in the country saw a decline in the percentage of uninsured adults following full implementation of the Obamacare coverage provisions, the Commonwealth Fund found in a new report to be released on its web site Wednesday.
  • Samantha Power is perhaps best known for her studies of the U.S.’s failure to intervene to prevent genocides. With another crisis underway in Aleppo, Ambassador Power, the U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, makes two appearances in Washington: On Tuesday it is to the Women’s Foreign Policy Group followed on Wednesday at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
  • The National Telecommunications and Information Administration hosts a webinar Wednesday on accelerating broadband access and improving digital inclusion as part of its BroadbandUSA Program.
    Happy Holidays!
